Bleu Sauvage: street art for the living world

In Bordeaux, many people already know A-MO, sometimes without realising it: a fox, a gorilla or a bird suddenly appearing on a street corner, on a wall they thought they knew. For years, the Bordeaux street artist has turned the city into an open-air gallery, bringing living creatures back where we no longer expect them – into the heart of urban space, precisely where we have grown used to no longer seeing animals at all.
With “Bleu Sauvage” (“Wild Blue”), the Musée Mer Marine devotes its new season to him and extends this treasure hunt within its walls: some sixty never-before-seen works make up a wild, marine bestiary in which blue – the blue of the sea, of the sky, of certain species – is at once a colour, an environment and a common thread.
A-MO works in particular with paintag, his signature technique: up close, all you see are lines, signs and tags; step back, and the animal appears. Up close, you see the gesture; from a distance, you see the living creature.
Look, understand, protect
Art and science in dialogue
True to the Musée Mer Marine’s approach, the exhibition brings art and science into dialogue – not side by side, but hand in hand: art makes us want to look, science makes us want to understand. Behind every painted animal lies a real animal and an entire ecosystem, and the exhibition invites visitors to discover, work by work, the species depicted, their habitats, their behaviour, their vulnerabilities and their conservation status.
For we protect best what we have learnt to see. This is the meaning of the exhibition’s second subtitle, street art for the living world, and of its partnership with HISA, a Bordeaux-based association working for biodiversity and for better coexistence between human activities and wildlife: one makes living creatures visible on walls, the other works to ensure they can go on existing in the real world.
An exhibition that keeps on evolving
Guest artists and workshops for young visitors
An exhibition devoted to street art could hardly stand still once installed in a museum: “Bleu Sauvage” will change over the weeks and welcome other perspectives. A-MO has invited two fellow artists and friends: Selor, who will join the exhibition in October and November, followed by Rouge Hartley in December.
During the school holidays, the museum also invites children to step into A-MO’s world through creative workshops:
- Autumn school holidays, Wednesdays 21 and 28 October: Mon animal en Paintag (paint-tag your own animal) at 2 pm and Pochoir sauvage (wild stencils) at 3:30 pm;
- Christmas holidays, Wednesdays 23 and 30 December: Regard sauvage (wild eyes) at 2 pm and Mini-skate Bleu Sauvage at 3:30 pm.
Plenty of good reasons to come back. The exhibition can be visited during museum opening hours.
